COMPOCYCLE Makes Biocomposites Recyclable and Market-Ready
20 August 2025
The COMPOCYCLE research project, led by Wageningen University & Research, is developing fully biobased and recyclable thermoset composites. This innovation enables natural fibres such as hemp, flax and bamboo to be used in circular applications, ranging from façade panels to interior components.
The breakthrough lies in the chemistry: the resins are specifically designed to be controllably degraded at end of life, allowing both the fibres and the resin to be reused or even upcycled.
CompositesNL is a partner in the project, together with several active members: TU Delft, NPSP, Qconcepts and Bambooder. Through this collaboration, the materials are tested directly in real-world applications, accelerating the transition from lab to market.
COMPOCYCLE contributes to the circular economy, the EU Green Deal and the reduction of fossil-based raw materials. The project targets a 5% share of the European biocomposites market, equivalent to 12,500 tonnes per year.
