New European Bridge Database Highlights Composite Potential

4 December 2025

The Norwegian Circular Materials Technology cluster (NCMT) has launched a unique European Bridge Database. This platform gathers detailed information about existing composite bridges across Europe, supporting engineers, designers, and public authorities in choosing composite solutions for infrastructure projects.

The database includes:

  • Technical specifications from realized bridge projects

  • Insights into approval processes across countries

  • Examples ranging from pedestrian bridges to full traffic structures

  • Information about involved stakeholders, such as suppliers and engineering firms

Real-life examples clearly demonstrate the benefits of composites.
The 42-meter Paradis Bridge in Norway was installed in just one hour, thanks to lightweight prefabricated composite components. And the 120-meter pedestrian and cycle bridge in Fredrikstad, built in 2003, has required almost no maintenance – showcasing the durability of composites in harsh environments.

This initiative marks a significant step in promoting composites in infrastructure, in line with the upcoming Composite Eurocode.
